The Glass Pavilion

You heard that old saying people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones right? In this case it's true. I came across a story of this place this week and just had to share. As a lover of interior design and architecture I just feel in love with this hip and sexy pad. Known for his modern designs, Los Angeles- based and self taught architect Steve Hermann finished his latest project in Montecito, Calif., about four months ago. This lot measures about three-and-a-half acres and gave him the space he needed to create a home featuring walls of glass. The 13,875-square-foot home features five bedrooms, five-and-a-half bathrooms, a kitchen with a wine room and an art gallery that displays the architect’s vintage car collection.

While the comparisons to one of Mies van der Rohe’s most famous works are apparent, Hermann’s work remains a singular success in architecture. The home is an open white stunner, with rooms that feature unrestricted views of the oak and fern Montecito landscape.

I think I could definitely live in this house. How cool would that be? It might be like living in a fish bowl. If it was out in the middle of no where, I would feel better, as I do like to walk around in my undies, and sometimes nothing at all if a fancy!!! It would be so relaxing to sit in that tub, staring out at the outdoors! And it would be like cooking in a outdoor kitchen. Or what if your getting your sport nookie on....blush, I guess one can dream........... except when it comes to cleaning the windows! How much Windex would that take?

He originally built the home for himself, but while the six-year project was underway, he says, his plans changed. The home is now listed for $35 million, and the furnishings are negotiable. Sotheby's International Realty has the listing.

  1. Another stunning home in Montecito. A bit too open, even in a seculded spot, but I’d do two layers of sheers to fix that when you wanted a little privacy. The staging is spot on as well in terms of the furniture, but my favorite room has got to be the bathroom. Sleek, simple and pitch perfect. Mr. Hermann gets extra points for not slapping the toilet against the glass wall as well.

  2. What worries me about this house, as a architecture student, is that it shows how little progression has occurred in architecture since the International Style of the 30’s. Sometimes an architect will come along and create a beautiful rectangle of our time. But too many still use Mies and his ilk as their starting point.

It feels a little like the masses of furniture designers who continue to reference Mid Century Modern as their inspiration.

  3. Reminds me of the designs of Frank Lloyd Wright and E. Stewart Williams [Frank Sinatra's home Twin Palms]. Elegant, simple, open and inviting. Very nice! The house does have a air of the Mistress streaking threw it!!!

  4. I'm with #1 Fan... it looks very "done". And Miss Ginger would never be able to do her "delicate business" in such an open space!

  5. $35 million? Is that all? I suspect if you can afford to buy this place, you can afford to hire a live-in maid who will do nothing but Windex those windows 24/7!

Scared of walking around nekkid in it.....but I'd probably get used to it.

That house is G-O-Gorgeous! But it also screams 'stalker alert'!

I wonder if the windows are stiletto proof?

  8. You’d have to have someone come every few days to clean the walls inside and out to keep it looking pristine. It’s not the cost of that that bothers me, because obviously he has a lot of it, but just how impractical that would be. Also, does anyone think that birds would be flying into the walls non-stop? Would kind of ruin my enjoyment of the place if birds were breaking their necks left and right.

  11. I couldn’t consider this home at any rate…my 2step boys have a tendency to play ball in the house when we’re not home. I shudder to think of what they’d to this house!

    It’s a beauty though!

  13. I think this place is an absolute, (obviously) MEGA modern masterpiece, but I also know that it appeals to a VERY limited audience. I also know that even though it’s on a large, very private lot, I’d still have a pretty tough time bathing & showering in front of floor-to-ceiling, clear glass walls! I eat, sleep and breath mid-century modern & contemporary, however this place is about on the farthest end of the extreme scale, I admit. However, it’s still stunning.

  14. That place would have to be out in the middle of nowhere. Could you imagine living next door and see the people living their having sex? It would be a live porn movie!!! I would always feel looked upon I think.
